Crystal Palace came out second best against Manchester City to lose 3-1 at Selhurst Park.

Roy Hodgson's men sat back and soaked up City pressure for most of the opening period but went behind in the 15th minute.

Kevin de Bruyne's defence-splitting pass caught Patrick van Aanholt napping and Raheem Sterling easily out-paced Scott Dann to fire a superb shot into the net.

Sterling added another in the 63rd minute by getting in front of Van Aanholt to turn home a left-wing cross from close range.

Palace gave City a scare when they pulled one back with an excellent direct free-kick just outside the box from Luka Milivojevik on 81 minutes.

But City substitute Gabriel Jesus made sure of maximum points in the last minute from a neat finish from swift counter-attack.

Palace: Guaita, Van Aanholt, Dann, Kelly, Wan-Bissaka, Milivojevic, McArthur (Sako 84), Schlupp (Kouyate 19), Zaha, Townsend (Meyer 77), Benteke.

Not used: Hennessey, Ward, Ayew, Batshuayi.

Man City: Ederson, Walker, Kompany, Laporte, Mendy, Gundogan, De Bruyne, D Silva (B Silva 63), Sane (Stones 85), Sterling, Aguero (Jesus 74).
