Derby day defeat for the Eagles

Crystal Palace lost by the odd goal at home to Tottenham Hotspur.

The defeat keeps Palace out of the relegation zone on goal difference but they deserved a point at a rain-soaked Selhurst Park.

The best chances from a dour opening period was when former Spurs man Andros Townsend fired into the side netting and Wayne Hennessey was equal to Harry Kane's drive.

After the break, Eagles defender James Tomkins wasted a good chance to net the opener with a header that flew just off target.

Palace were made to pay when Tottenham went ahead in the 65th minute through defender Juan Foyth. Kane's header from Erik Lamela's corner was cleared off the line and it rebounded to Foyth to nod in.

Substitute Jeffrey Schlupp let fly with an effort which Hugo Lloris beat out as the Eagles piled on the pressure for an equaliser.

Fellow sub Alexander Sorloth should have put away his effort from close range after Luka Milivojevic's shot was blocked by Foyth but the forward was foiled by Lloris late on.

Palace: Hennessey, Wan-Bissaka, Sakho, Tomkins (Kelly 60), Van Aanholt, McArthur (Sorloth 70), Milivojevic, Kouyate, Meyer (Schlupp 67), Townsend, Ayew.

Not used: Guaita, Ward, Riedewald, Puncheon.

Tottenham: Lloris, Trippier (Aurier 24), Foyth, Alderweireld, Davies, Sissoko, Wanyama, Alli, Lamela (Winks 81), Moura (Son 71), Kane.

Not used: Gazzaniga, Dier, Eriksen, Llorente.
