Roy Hodgson
Crystal Palace conceded a last-gasp goal to lose 1-0 away at Newcastle United.
Roy Hodgson's side were heading for a vital point on the road before Newcastle struck in the 86th minute for a totally undeserved victory.
Hodgson stuck with the same line-up that beat Premier League champions Chelsea last week and was hoping for a repeat performance.
It was a lacklustre match on a rainy, windy day in the North East with very few opportunities created by either club at St James' Park.
The home fans sparked into life after their former player Yohan Cabaye made a rash challenge on DeAndre Yedlin and felt it warranted a straight red card.
Palace's split strikers Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend looked sprightly and the Eagles edged the first half, even though Newcastle came closest to scoring when Christian Atsu fired into the side-netting.
Late in the second period, Newcastle tested Julian Speroni with an effort from substitute Mohamed Diame and Jonjo Shelvey's fizzer was beaten out by the goalkeeper.
Palace substitute Ruben Loftus-Cheek's cross-cum shot flashed past the post with a sliding Patrick van Aanholt unable to connect.
On a day when neither side looked like scoring, substitute Mikel Merino got in front of James McArthur to head Matt Richie's corner into the roof of the net with four minutes to go.
Newcastle: Darlow, Yedlin, Lascelles, Lejeune, Manquillo, Richie, Hayden (Merino 56), Shelvey, Atsu, Perez (Diame 65), Joselu (Mitrovic 78).
Not used: Darlow, Gamez, Clark, Diame, Murphy.
Palace: Speroni, Ward, Dann, Sakho, Van Aanholt, McArthur (Sako 87), Cabaye, Milivojevic, Schlupp, Townsend, Zaha (Loftus-Cheek 77).
Not used: Hennessey, Riedewald, Fosu-Mensah, Tomkins, Puncheon.
