Crystal Palace got their first goals and win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town in the EFL Cup.

A double from midfielder James McArthur helped the Eagles to a morale-boosting triumph against the Championship opponents.

Palace boss Frank de Boer made a raft of changes for this second round tie at Selhurst Park, with opposite number Mick McCarthy also fielding a weakened side.

Sullay Kaikai and Patrick van Aanholt fired efforts on goal but the best chance of the half came from midfield man Yohan Cabaye whose free-kick was pushed away by Dean Gerken.

After the break, keeper Gerken saved Kaikai's shot and Cabaye saw a strike go off target as Palace responded well from De Boer's half-time team talk.

And they went ahead on 76 minutes after McArthur drove into the back of the net from the edge of the area.

Jaosn Lokilo had two good chances before McArthur extended the lead with six minutes to go by converting Jeffrey Schlupp's cross.

Bersant Celina grabbed a consolation for the Tractor Boys in stoppage time but they ran out of time to add any more.

Palace: Speroni, Ward, Dann (Fosu-Mensah 46), Kelly, Schlupp, Puncheon, Cabaye, McArthur, Van Aanholt (Townsend 56), Kaikai (Lee 76), Lokilo.

Not used: Hennessey, Tomkins, Milivojevic, Benteke.

Ipswich: Gerken, Woolfenden, Fowler, Webber, Nydam (C. Smith 81), Rowe, Downes, McDonnell, Celina, McLoughlin (Patterson 81), Folami (Morris 62).
