Magpies steal a point

Crystal Palace came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle United.

Again Palace conceded the first goal but boss Alan Pardew - who was facing his old club - would be happy with the battling qualities shown to recover.

The Eagles were dealt a blow after 26 minutes with an injury to on-loan striker Yaya Sanogo who limped off with Fraizer Campbell replacing him in attack.

Campbell then had the ball in the Newcastle net with a header from Jason puncheon's cross but it was ruled out for offside.

Newcastle spent most of the first half defending deep, and on a rare attack up field, they went ahead three minutes before half-time. Daryl Janmaat sent over a cross from the right and an unmarked Papiss Cisse headed past Julian Speroni.

Pardew brought on top scorer Dwight Gayle and Yannick Bolasie for the last 25 minutes or so to spark Palace into life and the latter set up the Palace equaliser on 71. The DR Congo man's cross on the right was inch perfect for Campbell to slot hom from close range.

Wilfried Zaha had a goal-bound shot blocked by a defender and Magpies keeper Tim Krul made a diving save to block Brede Hangeland's header as Palace had to make do with a point.

Palace manager Alan Pardew: "I thought we should have won. We started well but the chances were few and far between. Newcastle only had one shot on target but scored. We struggled to break them down but scored a great goal - it was a really special cross and we deserved to get something out of the game.

"We had plenty of options on the bench and, in the end, the bench made a difference. Yannick Bolasie and Dwight Gayle came on and upped the tempo.

"It was nice to see my old team and my friends from the club. We took a point and should be pretty pleased with that."

Newcastle manager John Carver: "It's another game unbeaten. That's one win, three draws and two defeats now, which is not bad in this league. We said before the game we knew we were up against a big physical side and the pitch was quite lively, so we knew it was going to be a bit of a battle.

"I stuck Papiss Cisse in. I was brave to play two strikers away from home but he's a fox in the box and, if he keeps scoring, he has to be in the team.

"It's a bit strange facing Alan Pardew because I worked with him for four years. Once I got off the bus I went into professional mode. After the game he said to me, 'Well done, you deserved the point'."
