Crystal Palace suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Manchester United.

Juan Mata's second-half goal secured maximum points for the Red Devils, leaving Palace without a win since September.

United had an unfamiliar defence due to injuries and suspension and were enduring their worst start to a Premier League season.

Palace almost took advantage of makeshift pairing Daley Blind and Paddy McNair's indecision as Fraizer Campbell nipped inbetween them to lob over David de Gea, but his effort ended up on the roof of the net.

The second half had more clear-cut chances with Julian Speroni tipping behind Luke Shaw's drive and James McArthur cleared Marouane Fellaini's header from a Wayne Rooney's corner off the line.

Mata was introduced in the 63rd minute and four minutes later, his deflected shot outside the area went in beyond Speroni. He was denied another after his strike smacked against the upright.

Palace are without a win in their last five games and remain outside the relegation zone on goal difference.

Man Utd: De Gea, Valencia, Carrick, McNair (Fletcher 90), Shaw, Blind, Januzaj (Mata 63), Fellaini, Rooney, Di Maria (Wilson 71), Van Persie.

Not used: Lindegaard, Ander Herrera, Vermijl, Blackett.

Palace: Speroni, Mariappa, Dann, Delaney, Ward, Puncheon, McArthur, Ledley, Bolasie (Gayle 81), Chamakh (Bannan 81), Campbell (Doyle 90).

Not used: McCarthy, Hennessey, Fryers, Kelly.
