Crystal Palace were well beaten with a 2-0 defeat at Southampton.

The Eagles conceded two quick-fire goals after the break and failed to find a single shot on target all game.

Southampton dominated throughout and almost took the lead in the sixth minute but fit again Joel Ward cleared Morgan Scheiderlin's header off the line.

Rickie Lambert curled just over the upright and then had a dangerous free-kick parried away by Julian Speroni.

Palace should have gone in front in their next attack when Maroune Chamakh raced onto Barry Bannan's pass and hesitated to shoot when in the area before tumbling under the challenge of keeper Artur Boruc. Referee Martin Atkinson felt the Palace striker had dived and brandished a yellow card.

Inside four minutes of the second half, Southampton netted twice to put the game beyond Palace's reach. Mile Jedinak lost possession on the edge of the box and Dani Osvaldo was able to get past Kagisho Dikgacoi to fire into the net on 47 minutes.

Two minutes later, Lambert's brilliant curling free-kick went in off the post with Speroni stranded.

Substitute Jay Rodriguez had the ball in the net for Saints late on but it was ruled out for offside which would have compounded Palace's misery.

Southampton: Boruc, Clyne, Fonte, Lovren, Shaw, Wanyama, Schneiderlin, S Davis (Ward-Prowse 67), Lallana (Ramírez 86), Osvaldo, Lambert (Rodriguez 77).
