Crystal Palace's terrible start to the season continued with a shock 4-1 Capital One Cup defeat at Preston.

Palace manager Dougie Freedman rested some players, with Lewis Price starting in goal, Kyle De Silva was given a chance on the wing, Kwesi Appiah up top and Jon Williams returned from injury.

But the Eagles began badly again, going a goal down after just two minutes in this second round cup tie when Akpo Sodje nodded down Jeffrey Monakana's cross for Nicky Wroe to score.

Preston moved further ahead in the 18th minute after Sodje netted past Price after Paul Huntington's header was cleared off the line by Darcy Blake.

The away side got back in the game through Aaron Wilbraham who headed home Williams' cross in the 37th minute for his first Palace goal.

But the Eagles went 3-1 down just four minutes later with a long-range effort from Monakana.

Then Wroe got his second of the game and Preston's fourth on 63 minutes with a low shot in off the post to condemn Palace to an embarrassing defeat against the League One club.

Palace: Price, Ward, Wright, Martin, Moxey, Blake, Williams (Garvan 64), De Silva (Zaha 46), O'Keefe, Wilbraham, Appiah (Moritz 46).

Not Used: Speroni, Ramage, Parr, Dikgacoi.
