Crystal Palace moved away from relegation trouble with a 2-1 win at home to Barnsley.

The Eagles roared out of the traps and created a number of chances early on. Barnsley keeper Steele fumbled Nathaniel Clyne's weak effort in the 15th minute, then Neil Danns missed the target from three yards.

James Vaughan blasted off target and was denied a penalty after getting knocked over in the penalty box on 22 minutes. The on-loan Everton striker then headed Darren Ambrose's cross wide of the goal.

But Palace took a deserved lead in the 29th minute when when Danny Haynes gave the ball away to Danns and the midfielder surged forward before firing a left-footed shot into the corner of the goal.

Two minutes before the break, Barnsley snatched an equaliser. Julian Speroni made an excellent save from Jacob Butterfield, but shortly afterwards Marlon Harewood found space to collect Jason Shackell's pass to slot home.

Hotshot Vaughan was denied another penalty shout in the second half, Steele then pulled of a superb save to keep out Danns' ferocious shot and Vaughan saw his header saved as Palace turned the screw.

Vaughan was eventually awarded a penalty against him after Diego Arismendi climbed on his back in the penalty area and the striker put away the spot kick.

Danns hit the post after a mazy run, while Speroni ensured maximum points for Palace with a save from Martin Devaney near the end.

The win pushes Palace seven points above third-from-bottom Sheffield United and the trap door.
