Crystal Palace staged a late fightback but were defeated 4-3 at Preston.

Both sides started the day in the bottom three and Preston's success leapfrogs them over rivals Palace who stay in the drop zone.

Preston's Jon Parkin got the scoring under way in the 13th minute with a low finish into the bottom corner from Paul Coutts' left-wing cross.

But the Londoners were on terms seven minutes later thanks to a 30-yard drive from midfielder Owen Garvan - his first goal for Palace.

Parkin restored Preston's lead in the 25th minute with a powerful shot into the top left-hand corner from Sean St Ledger's assist.

Wilfired Zaha and Andrew Dorman went close for the Eagles before Preston made it 3-1 on 36 minutes after an amazing 35-yard effort from Keith Treacy.

Before the break Parkin had a decent opportunity, while shortly after the interval Treacy saw two efforts saved and blocked.

Preston got their fourth goal of the day on 66 minutes after Julian Bennett fouled Coutts in the area and skipper Callum Davidson put away the spot kick.

Dorman pulled a goal back for Palace with his first goal for the club three minutes later, heading home Paddy McCarthy's cross.

With 10 minutes to go, Darel Russell fouled Pablo Counago in the box and James Vaughan converted to make it 4-3 but Preston held on for the win.
