Crystal Palace's hopes of avoiding the drop were dealt a blow after a 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff.

They got off to a bad start by conceding in the fourth minute when Peter Whittingham's low corner was flicked on by Stephen McPhail and an unmarked Gabor Gyepes slotted into the corner.

Palace were inches away from equalising after Clint Hill's header from a Darren Ambrose free-kick crashed against the crossbar.

Just before the hour mark Hill nodded the Eagles level with a downward header from Ambrose's corner.

However, David Burke's neat shot from the edge of the box sealed an undeserved win for Cardiff 10 minutes later.
