Crystal Palace were held to a 1-1 draw at Championship pacesetters Cardiff City.

Former Palace defender Mark Hudson scored an own goal to put the Londoners in front but Peter Whittingham equalised for the Welsh club.

The first goal arrived after 13 minutes when Danny Butterfield sent over a cross from the right and Alan Lee's header was diverted into his own net by Hudson.

Victor Moses had to hobble off injured three minutes later and was replaced by fit again on-loan West Ham striker Freddie Sears.

Then Cardiff were on level terms in the 19th minute after a strong run from Chris Burke ended with a cross into the six yard box and Whittingham tucked the ball away.

That goal sparked City into life and Eagles stopper Julian Speroni had to be on alert to keep out a rasper from Anthony Gerrard and a header from Whittingham.

Burke, Gerrard and Michael Chopra had further efforts on goal as Cardiff turned the screw but failed to find the back of the net.

In the second half, Paddy McCarthy made a good block to thwart Chopra's strike and Whittingham fired off target but Cardiff failed to match their first half tempo.

Stern John, back after overcoming a dislocated elbow, was brought on by Palace boss Neil Warnock for the final 13 minutes and he almost snatched a late winner but blasted over the bar.
