Penalty pain for Ireland as they go out

June 16 2002

Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland

Clinton Morrison watched from the bench as the Republic of Ireland were dramatically knocked out of the World Cup 3-2 on penalties to Spain.

Spain went in front after eight minutes through Fernando Morientes and looked like they would be comfortable winners.

But the introduction of Kenny Cunningham and particularly Niall Quinn, on his international swansong, got them back into the game.

The Republic should have equalised with a 62nd minute penalty, but Ian Harte saw his spot kick saved by the keeper.

With eight minutes to go, Mick McCarthy used up his final substitution in a bid to win the game. And bizarrely brought on Wimbledon's David Connolly instead of the more prolific Morrison.

Amazingly, the Irish won a penalty in the 90th minute and Robbie Keane made no mistake to bring the game to extra-time.

No more goals were scored and Ireland lost the penalty shoot-out 3-2 and end their World Cup dream.
