Crystal Palace secured a 2-1 win over Torquay United in the Carling Cup first round thanks to two second half goals by Darren Ambrose.

The former Charlton midfielder put Palace 1-0 up on 65 minutes with a header from six yards out.

Torquay levelled the game in the 74th minutes through a Tim Sills header.

However it was Ambrose again who sealed the victory for The Eagles from the penalty spot four minutes later after Alassane N'Diaye was fouled in the box by Chris Todd.

Palace: Speroni, Hill, Derry, McCarthy, Fonte, Ambrose, Danns, Moses (Scannell 73), Lee (Djilali 63), Butterfield, N'Diaye.

Not used: Clyne, Flahavan, Lawrence, Ertl, Cadogan.

Torquay United: Bevan, Nicholson, Robertson, Todd, Sill, Rendell (Benyon 70), Wroe, Thompson (Brough 90), Carlisle, Stevens (Carayol 70), Charnock.

Not used: Ellis, Rice, Hodges, Joyce.
