Peter Taylor

The highs and lows of former Crystal Palace manager Peter Taylor's career.

1953

Born in Southend on January 3.

1970

Joins boyhood club Southend United as a trainee.

1973

Crystal Palace snap up the winger and scores 33 goals in 122 appearances.

1975

Gets capped for England while playing for the Third Division club.

1976

Makes big-money move to Tottenham Hotspur, making 123 appearances.

1980

Joins Leyton Orient where he plays 56 games.

1983

Loaned out to Oldham Athletic and makes permanent switch to Exeter City - his last club as a player.

1986

Becomes player-manager of non-league Dartford leading the club to the Southern Cup twice.

1993

Moves on to become Southend manager but resigned after being unable to take Shrimpers beyond midtable of Division One.

1995

Helps Conference club Dover Athletic avoid relegation.

1996

Glenn Hoddle asks him to become England Under-21 manager. After just one defeat in 15 matches, Taylor was replaced by Howard Wilkinson.

1999

Takes on Gillingham manager role and leads the Gills to Division Two play-off triumph over Wigan Athletic.

2000

Appointed Leicester City manager in the Premier League and after a shock FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Wycombe Wanders, City finish in 13th place. Sacked two months into 2001/02 campaign with the Foxes bottom, having spent £23million on players including the £5m buy of Ade Akinbiyi.

2000

England caretaker manager for a 1-0 defeat against Italy and makes David Beckham captain for the first time.

2001

Went to Brighton & Hove Albion to become manager and led a team built by former boss Micky Adams to the Division Two title. Resigns due to the club's lack of ambition.

2002

Installed as Hull City manager and steers them to Division Two in 2004 and the Championship in 2005. An 18th place finish for the Tigers followed.

2004

Re-appointed England Under-21 coach part-time while still at Hull.

2006

June - Becomes Crystal Palace boss after Simon Jordan pays £300,000 compensation to Hull to land his services.

2007

January - Resigns as England Under-21 manager to concentrate on job at Palace.

May - Leads Palace to a disappointing 12th place finish at the end of the 2006/07 Championship season.

October - Sacked 10 games into 2007/08 campaign after just 10 points on the board.
