Jamie Scowcroft
Crystal Palace cruised to a 2-0 victory over Colchester, ending their season on a high and terminating the home side's faint promotion hopes, reports Peter Gillman.
Goals in each half brought the Eagles a convincing win and once again left supporters wondering about the might-have-beens.
Palace went ahead on 11 minutes when Jamie Scowcroft met a long ball from Carl Fletcher and looped a header over keeper Gerkin.
Ten minutes later, Fletcher hit a pile-driver against the Colchester crossbar with Gerkin beaten.
Palace remained on top in the second half with shots from Scowcroft, Morrison and Leon Cort. Then Palace had to defend as Cort cleared a shot from Iwelumo off the line.
Palace were still pushing men forward and on 69 minutes went 2-0 up through Ben Watson. Tom Soares drilled in a cross and Watson
fired home from 18 yards, the ball squirming under Gerkin's body.
Colchester faded and Soares and Scowcroft both had good openings in the final minutes.
Palace: Speroni, Lawrence, Cort, Hudson, Borrowdale; Fletcher (Soares 30), Watson, Kennedy, McAnuff, Morrison (Ifill 65), Scowcroft.
Subs (not used): Flinders, Butterfield, Kuqi.
