Ifill seals victory for Palace

February 20 2007

Paul Ifill

Paul Ifill

Paul Ifill scores his second goal for the Eagles, as they win 1-0 at Roots Hall against Southend United.

Peter Taylor opted to change his up front pairing once again, opting for Clinton Morrison and James Scrowcroft up front. There was a place for Lewis Grabban and recent signing Dave Martin on the bench.

Southend had most of the first half and missed a number of opportunities to score, including a missed header from former Palace man Lee Bradbury.

In the second half, Gabor Kiraly excellently parried away a deflected shot by Mark Gower.

Southend were made to pay for a series of missed chances when Ifill scored the decisive goal in the 64th minute.

Scrowcroft crossed a ball to substitute Dougie Freedman whose shot was blocked by Lewis Hunt, and the former Millwall midfielder reacted quickest in the box to score.

Towards the end of the game, Peter Taylor brought on hot prospect Lewis Grabban to make his Championship debut.

On 90 minutes Ifill was forced off with an injury, which also resulted in another Championship debut for Dave Martin.

The result leaves Palace 11 points off the playoffs.

Southend United: Flahavan, Wilson (Harrold, 79) Hunt, Gower, Maher (c), Foran, Eastwood, Bradbury, Clarke, Sodje, Campbell-Ryce (Francis, 84) Subs not used: Prior, Colis, Moussa.
