Palace and Burnley share spoils

January 10 2004

Selhurst Park

Selhurst Park

Burnley held Crystal Palace to a terrible, boring 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park.

Thomas Myhre, Curtis Fleming, Danny Granville and Jamie Smith all returned to the Palace side which lost 3-0 at Spurs in the FA Cup the previous weekend.

But Fleming was only on the field 12 minutes when he had to go off injured and was replaced by Gary Borrowdale.

Andy Johnson nearly opened the scoring with a flashing header wide from Julian Gray's cross after 28 minutes.

Gray had two chances to score himself. The first brought a good save from Burnley keeper Brian Jensen, then he blazed over the bar minutes later when he should have got his effort on target.

Neil Shipperley and Johnson had further chances to break the deadlock.

In the second period, Ben Watson blasted over the bar from 25 yards. But it was Eagles keeper Thomas Myhre who kept his side in the game with a couple of top-class saves - the first of which was to tip over Mark McGregor's header, then a shot from Robbie Blake.

Then Jensen thwarted Watson with a 30-yard strike and later Danny Granville and Gray as Palace pushed for a winning goal they could not find.

Crystal Palace: Myhre, Fleming, Granville, Butterfield, Popovic, Johnson, Shipperley, Smith, Watson, Gray, Routledge.

Subs: Berthelin, Freedman, Black, Borrowdale, Soares.

Burnley: Jensen, Roche, May, McGregor, Camara, Chadwick, Chaplow, Grant, Weller, Blake, Ian Moore.

Subs: Branch, Little, Alan Moore, West, Pilkington.
