Wimbledon FC
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may...that's not to be negative about our win 'away' to Wimbledon. Just enjoy it while you can, urges Jamesey
I really hate it when our fans start gloating... one-nil, one-nil, etc. The usual result is an equaliser from the opposition. Sometimes it's best to ride your luck and keep shtum.
However I think that after Saturday's result (3-1) against the Dons we are all entitled to have a bit of a gloat. We haven't had a lot to cheer about in the past five or six years... relegation from the Premiership, Venables, administration, Alan Smith, a brief renaissance with Steve Bruce, and then nearly two seasons of the appalling Carrot impersonator.
So as I write this column on a Saturday night, after witnessing a wonderful result, I feel we are all entitled to a bit of self-satisfaction. Mind you, I had my doubts after the first half when I felt we were very much second best.
But whether it was Steve Kember's half-time pep talk or something in the tea-cups, it was a very different and determined Palace in the second half. Perhaps they were so considerate that they wanted to save all the goals for us lot behind the Holmesdale net.
Two crackers from the Butter man and Hughes and the Dougster's penalty were a feast for us.
So we have nine points out of nine and two tough games to come next week (Sheff U and Scumwall). Which way will the fickle finger of fate point? Well if we play with the same guts and skill as we did in the second half against the Wombles, I don't think we have to fear too many teams in Division 1.
Although I am a regular writer on this site, I usually sit in the Main Stand and I am not going to change now after many years and the company of many old friends who sit near me. The seat I was allocated in the Holmesdale was a unique experience for me.
Block J, Row 10, Seat 161 turned out to be the shortest row I have ever sat in. Just me on my Jack Jones. But I had loads of leg room, no irritating neighbours and a smashing view.
Might even change my season ticket next season when we are in the Premiership? (Gloat, gloat)
