Jamesey's Wolverine Blues... and all that jazz

March 4 2003

Molineux

Molineux

A miserable couple of weeks indeed for we red-and-blues - or claret-and-blues, as we have turned back into (anyone notice?). But there are glimmers of hope, predicts Jamesey

Ah, the Wolverine Blues. That won't mean much to the younger HOL members but

to anyone of a certain age, it will bring echoes of early American jazz music and the stupendous talent of Bix Beiderbecke, trumpeter of genius, who managed to drink himself to death by the age of 28.

Well, I have long gone past that milestone, although the solace of drink has been a great temptation after Sheffield Wed and Wolves. And, as I write, we have two more northern trips in the next few days...Derby Co and Bradford City.

After a rotten dose of flu, I am determined to be optimistic. First I read in the Press (and I have read every paper I could get my hands on after the Wolverine disaster) that T Francis is selling Akinbiyi at the first opportunity.

Whether this is media nonsense I know not, but it is very encouraging if we unload that rather limited person to somewhere else...anywhere, please...

The other piece of comparative cheer was a report in Monday's Daily Telegraph on the Wolves game. I admit I wasn't there and HOL members who were will obviously put me right.

But among all the "Wolves mangle Eagles" type headlines was a low-key, bottom of the page report by sports writer, Nicholas

Harling.

The headline read "Fickle fans lifted by Miller", and the journalist went on to say that Miller's hat-trick fially placated the infamously impatient Molineux crowd and that the result bordered on "freakish".

Well, I was really beginning to enjoy this from the depths of my misery. Mr Harling continued: "Three goals in the last ten minutes, two of them from Miller, gave Wolves an outrageously flattering victory to leave their fans crowing, abruptly changing their mood of earlier when Palace had monopolised possession."

Was this a journalist's fantasy or the truth? We must be told...
