Black magic sends Palace to quarter-finals

December 3 2002

Tommy Black

Tommy Black

A Tommy Black brace helped 10-man Palace to the Worthington Cup quarter-finals as they beat Oldham 2-0 at Selhurst Park.

Black will be hoping to get a recall to the side after his superb perfromance. After an early shot from David Eyres, which Alex Kolinko saved easily Black got the opener.

His looping header went over giant keeper Leslie Pogliacomi from Danny Granville's left-wing cross after 11 minutes.

Hayden Mullins had a shot narrowly over the crossbar from a Black cross on 15 minutes and afterwards Black went on a run from the half-way line to see his cross sliced away by a defender.

Oldham's Julian Baudet went close with a 30-yard effort and down the other end, Mullins had a similar shot put over the bar by Pogliacomi.

On the stroke of half-time, Granville was harshly sent-off after a two-footed lunge on Michael Clegg but did not seem to make barely any contact.

For the second half, Francis took off Gareth Williams and brought on full-back Gary Borrowdale to shore up things at the back.

Dele Adebola was put through by Black for a chance on goal but he messed up his shot. But he returned the favour in the 74th minute, passing to Black on the right side of the box and he slotted home in the corner to make it 2-0.
