I've been very impressed by the amount spent in recent years on players. How wisely it's been spent, not so much.

We've had some duds but I'd be interested to know how we compare to other teams in terms of expensive failures. I.e.: some kind of ratio of return for investment. Although we could reel off names of some sh*te players we've paid for, I've not felt like we've been any worse for this than many other English clubs. It might feel worse given that we scrutinise our own signings more than those of others, but I'd be surprised to find that we were anywhere near the worst club for wasting money on flops.

Perhaps not but certain situations have probably led us to overspending as well. January a prime example, had to be done to keep us up, but I think even Parish himself conceded in an interview that none of the signings were considered to be particularly good business from a financial point of view. Did we need Schlupp and PVA? Undoubtedly. Were they worth a combined £25mil+? No way.

Unless some very astute decisions are made I think we'll go down next season if it isn't this season.

Have we in fact spent the most in managerial failures though . . ?

Read in an article yesterday a quote that "Frank was repaying a loan taken out from Sam & Parish". Hard to argue really.

Yeah that would be quite interesting. I think we've definitely prioritised a first 11 over a squad of 25, now we are starting to feel the effects, we need to rely on a bit of luck now and will take a couple of years to get the balance right.

Exactly my thoughts. These 2 seasons are massive. After that it might get easier and if we've been doing our homework, even better. Must get a dof though. Freedman? Why oh why?

If only pardew had the sense to bring in a cheaper back up for souare.

For me it hinges a bit on Wickham and Benteke. The return on Wickham has been bad so far, but he got a nasty injury so I don't equate his purchase to bad business (yet). Benteke isn't scoring goals and cost £30m. Looks like bad business but actually, played in the right way he is actually a significantly better goalscorer than the strikers we had in the squad at the time of purchase. So again, time will tell as to whether the purchase of Benteke was bad business or not. If, in a season or two time we evaluate Benteke and Wickham to have been poor business then perhaps I'll change my perception.
