Mark Battenburg is prime example of everything that is wrong with refereeing. This culture of "game management", letting things go to suit, or carding players to avoid blame as he put it (about the battle of the bridge). It is corruption based on vanity.

I think that VAR should have very limited use otherwise we are going to see Referees just asking the question about everything to stop them getting the blame. "Is there a reason why I cannot give that goal"? How far do they then go back - it could get very silly. I prefer no VAR!

How many times have you watched match of the day and the 'pundits' can't agree wether or not it's a penalty. ....so I'm afraid even with VAR there will be subjectivity..

How many times have you watched match of the day and the 'pundits' can't agree wether or not it's a penalty. ....so I'm afraid even with VAR there will be subjectivity..

You have highlighted subjectivity in terms of penalty incidents but there will also be subjectivity in terms of whether a player in an offside position is deemed to have interfered with the keeper's line of sight as the ball flies past him and goes into the goal.

And I suspect there will be debate and interpretation as to a "Clear and obvious error".Perhaps the debate will move away from the onfield referee and focus on the VAR system !

It boils down to competency: can the referee enforce to law, or do they allow subjectivity to influence them. The culture encourages the latter, so VAR will never work.

Offside is just one aspect for VAR. This is black and white and VAR is perfect for it. With regard all the other decisions its subjective by all that look at the screen. I think that with more looks at the screen and in slow mo, mire correct decisions will be made. I am fully for VAR.
