People who slate a signing like this dont understand football to my money. Oh and you are bang on about a right back but dont forget Wardy can do a job there. You talk about people not understanding football and then you go on to say Ward can do a job there. Joel is a hero but would struggle in the championship. He is nowhere near PL quality, on top of that the only cover we have is playing a CB out of position.

I am certainly not alone in thinking that a right-back was a priority. If before the season started I had predicted that Ward would be first choice at right-back, we would not be signing any strikers and would spend aprox £7 Mill in the transfer window many would have concluded that I had either taken leave of my senses or engaged in a wind-up to stimulate debate on HOL !

Plenty would have believed you. I'm not even sure we spent 7 mil. The fees are probably in installments. Having one right back and Kelly seems ridiculous, but we went nearly a season with no left back so we had to even things out.

Forever trustworthy eh grumpymort If you are correct, I assume that we only pay £8m if McCarthy plays plenty of games. If he does, that would indicate he was a good signing and a strong player. If so, £8m is fine. If he proves to be a sicknote our exposure is £3m. So it DOES look like good business. In any case the fee was undisclosed. However: ''BBC Sport journalist David Ornstein has said on Twitter that Crystal Palace are only paying £3m to bring Everton midfielder James McCarthy to Selhurst Park, in what is a surprise update given other contrasting reports. However, Ornstein has disagreed with the Daily Mail – and another report by Sky Sports – by saying the deal is actually worth £3m. Whether that is simply the upfront fee with further add-ons included is unclear.'' Perhaps you can enlighten us as to the exact nature of the deal please grumpymort. We can then update Wikipedia.

| Wouldn't it be good to at least let the man put on a Palace shirt a few times before we judge him?
