Bentenke and Wickham out of contract in the summer and Batman's loan will come to an end (if not cancelled before then). Getting him now means the club can see if he works out and if not they might renew Big Ben's contract (they might anyway). Very few strikers score even double figures in the PL each season, especially outside of the so-called big six clubs. Therefore, as much as goals it will be what else he brings to the team that we need to judge him on. For us he will need to be able to retain the ball, win direct balls in the air and bring others into play. I think that's why on reflection Batshuayi just doesn't fit in as he is just a good 6-yard poacher and we need more than that. It is also why I think Bentenke should be given more credit for his recent displays. Ultimately though, if we are to push on we do need a regular goal scorer. You only have to look at what Leicester, Southampton and even West Ham (with Antonio) have achieved by having someone who regularly chips in with goals. These teams play football with far more energy and vibrancy and goalscorers do rely on those around them. Edited by Willo (22 Jan 2021 11.03am)

Edited by Willo (22 Jan 2021 11.03am) While you make a good point, Ings, Vardy and Antonio all make things happen, they don't just wait for the ball to arrive on a plate. They work hard outside the box as well as in it and make runs that give the midfield something to aim for. Wilf has done a good job this year but he is not a striker and still often drifts out wide. I have a feeling that Mateta could be the sort of player that will cause chaos; I think it's those long, awkward legs. I'm definitely positive even if the YouTube clips suggest he will miss some sitters.

Assuming that he is fit then he needs to play because if we wait until next season he will have had the talent knocked out of him.

Similar to us and Zaha to an extent. Add a willing runner with height and strength and we could be a different team

One of his supposed assets is his height - 6'4" The position of striker in a Palace team is a poisoned chalice. You just can't be too critical when we have such a God-awful 'get rid of it quick' midfield and a manager too slow to mix things up in a constructive way. Regardless, if he does still manage to bag a few we should be happy.

Something that Palace do so little of knowing that firstly the ball will never arrive on a plate and secondly when have our midfield recently ever aimed for somebody playing up front and successfully completed the pass?
