the criticism of Mateta is generally unbalanced and unfair - he may look as if he is lumbering but he's a real unit - he shows nous and is good on the ball, a bit crash, bang wallop attacking wise, which is why he wud fit in to Roy's 7-0-3 formation rather than link up in a Viera 4-3-3 - he has not been given much of a run but when he did get his chance he took it, far too early to write him off but he may not fit in to Vieira's way of playing.

I hear a chap called Messi has just become available I hear he is rather decent, I wouldn't know as I don't watch Spanish football much. Would it be worth sending Mateta back and going for this guy?

It is well known hat Messi will only play for clubs with vertical red and blue stripes. Our change of kit this season now rules this out.....if only.....I blame Parrish.

If Roy, Patrick and the majority of punters on this site think Mateta is a pile, is not Premiership quality then the sooner we cut short the loan and free up the place/£15m quid the better. And for those saying he deserves another chance, please check out his one-on-one with the keeper on Saturday. Abject doesn’t begin to describe it. Edited by Kant (05 Aug 2021 10.00pm)

I think Matitties needs to be given a chance, far too many writing him off before seasons even started. He didn’t get a chance last season and I think it was more Steve telling Roy not too play his as per the rules of the loan having ab obligation to buy since he knew Roy would be off and didn’t know if the new manager would want him. He will obviously be a bit rusty not having much game time last season but he does get in the right positions and soon enough he will start scoring goals.

We don’t have the luxury of persevering with blokes who are clearly not up to it. You don’t need to see someone over half a season to know they are pants. A couple of training sessions should be more than sufficient to know if someone is going to cut it. It’s not just Mateta’s first touch that lets him down. It’s his second, third and fourth touches too. Get rid and move on.
